    End of Powerarchiver

    Powerarchiver is dead no updates to fix bugs no new features, no communication and errors in program update system with scripting errors. Duplicate context menus windows 11 no fixes no updates I declare that this is the last version.

    Windows 11 Shell Extension crash
    W
    Copied the Take Command shortcut, changed Target to be wt.exe -p “Take Command” and saved it. Right-clicked to get to properties and Explorer crashed. (wt.exe is the Microsoft Terminal program, which I have installed from the Microsoft Store.) The Target path had changed to: C:\Users{username}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\wt.exe -p “Take Command” Created a new shortcut in a Start Menu folder and set the command line to the same, and it crashed the same. Created a new shortcut and set the command line to mspaint.exe (also a Windows Store app) and Explorer crashed on right-click on the shortcut. It appears PowerArchiver shell extensions doesn’t handle Windows Store apps in shortcuts properly. Perhaps it needs better defensive coding around checking the Target of shortcuts, or just ignoring shortcuts altogether. Running PA 22.00.11 on Windows 11 24H2 Build 26100.6584

    Was Power Archiver affected by the WinRAR/.rar vulnerability discovered by ESET researchers recently? Not sure if PA is using their libraries for extraction.

    Ultimate zip was made by powerarchiver
    D
    From google search AI Overview Yes, that’s correct. UltimateZip was indeed a product of the same company that developed PowerArchiver, and it was essentially a rebranded version of PowerArchiver. It was discontinued and replaced by PowerArchiver.

    News/Update on PowerArchiver/Connexion in 2024
    TheAndyMacT
    Hi everyone, some good news about PowerArchiver… I’ve managed to get in touch with the original developer of PowerArchiver, Ivan Petrovic, and he has confirmed that the product is not dead or abandoned, in fact it is still very much alive! There has been a hiatus over the past months for various reasons, but that we should expect to see stuff coming through in the coming months (hopefully the next 2 months).

    Zip extraction from windows 11 by windows
    D
    Basically I used powerarchiver context menus to zip up a folder then i used windows 11 own built in zip extractor via the context menu to extract all and this is where it throw up a fault. , I’m using windows 11 . The file that was a problem in the zip that windows 11 could not extract was iva “babe” cotton.jpg I know it has non standard quotes in it. However I had winrar on the computer and tried the exact same method with their context menu compress to zip and then I extracted the file with windows own extract all context menu and it had no problems. This indicates that powerarchiver is doing something different with iva “babe” cotton.jpg compressing to zip. Then I changed iva “babe” cotton.jpg to iva babe cotton.jpg and compressed it with powerarchiver and then tried it with windows 11 extract all and had no problems. It looks like powerarchiver is doing something to that one file that has quotes in it. Please note that powerarchiver extracted both zip files with no problems, only windows built in zip extraction had the fault. Reason I’m letting people know in case they send zip files with special characters in files names to people who do not have powerarchiver. When will a fix be implemented?

    PA2023 22.00.09 trying to delete a directory from a tar file.
    Brian GregoryB
    I had a large .tar file (a backed up WSL) and I want to delete a few directories and their contents from it using PA2023. PA just destroys the whole archive as soon as I try to delete a directory, leaving it in a state where PA2023 won’t even open it any more. I tried several times and also tried compressing it to .tar.xz instead - same result. This should either actually work, or it should say operation not supported and do nothing.

        OK. I completely mis-understood your original message.
        @drteeth:

        When I drag a file (no difference left or right drag) onto an archive, I get an error message saying the archive cannot be created as it exists - this is unecessary (can it be removed) - I get asked if I want to update the existing file - which I do.

        I thought this was two dialogues - but you meant that the information is only in the one; and I do see this.

        I don’t agree that it is unnecessary - what if you dropped on the wrong archive (or only meant to drop in a gap to do a windows move/copy and not an archive process)? This is the only way to provide an “oops - cancel” option.

        @drteeth:

        I would like an option as to whether the file is moved or added - I can only seem to do the latter.

        Correct - drag and drop to an archive only performs the “copy” function (as in backup).

        @drteeth:

        Part of this process is a message asking if I want to overwrite the existing acrchive…which is quite alarming.

        Only if you choose not to “update” the existing archive. This is logical as you are then creating an archive with the same name (and in the same folder) as the existing one - it should not be overwritten silently.

        All in PA 11.03.04 (english).

            The file is moved or copied NOT deleted. The recycle bin can also be used as a safety net. There is no need for an extra “oops - cancel” option.

            It does not have to be so, cf WinZip.

            Adding or moving a file to an archive has got nothing to do with overwriting the archive…the message appears even with differently archive/file names.

            Cheers

              I wasn’t referring to the dragged file, update modifies the archive file as well, which could be the unwanted action (e.g. oops - wrong archive).

              No, you are adding <file>to <archive.zip>so modifying the existing archive. If you cancel this add, then the next action would be to create a new archive using the filename of the original archive (hence overwriting it).

              Drag & drop is not creating <file.zip>.

              Of course, you could say that this overwrite should not occur - when choosing Cancel to update, then just cancel everything.</file.zip></archive.zip></file>

                So a file is added to the archive either way, it can be deleted.

                Why should there be a ‘next action’? The way you are writing it is as if you regard it as an inevitable action. If I want to create an archive, I will…but what has drag and drop got to do with it?

                    we did next action on purpose, in case you sometimes want to overwrite instead of update the file.

                    but i still dont get error message….

                      That’s strange as the situation is consistent here across 3 PCs. Unless you can suggest a way to diagnose/debug the process, I’ll have to give up on drag and drop. Now where’s that copy of WinZip?

                            yeah, thats supposed to be that way - i get different worded one since for vista we had to use different drag and drop code for it to work (one without can not create but just update notification)….

                            if you guys want, we could give full d&d options window when you drag and drop here (check with archive open in PA and then drag and drop file for example)? Or just change the wording to mention update only and not can not create?

                                      Almost there. Just need to get rid of the ‘already exists’ message.

                                      Of course I know the archive exists…that’s why I want to drop a file on it;);):).

                                      Then the overwrite warning needs to go. Drag and drop is either add or move or cancel. All can be done from the new, first dialogue box. No files will or should be deleted so no extra warnings should be needed IMHO.

                                      Thanks for the work so far…so glad I registered.

                                          First I get a big ‘add’ box with many options for adding to an archive, moving to an archive etc.

                                          Then, I get <filename>already exists, update existing file. yes/no buttons. If I click ‘yes’ operation proceeds, if I click ‘no’, get box asking if I want to overwrite existing file…not clicked ‘yes’ on that one. IMHO, none of these are needed as nothing should get deleted…they just add unecessary mouse clicks; agn IMHO.

                                          Can supply screenshots if you like. Just ask.
