Hi everyone, some good news about PowerArchiver… I’ve managed to get in touch with the original developer of PowerArchiver, Ivan Petrovic, and he has confirmed that the product is not dead or abandoned, in fact it is still very much alive! There has been a hiatus over the past months for various reasons, but that we should expect to see stuff coming through in the coming months (hopefully the next 2 months).
I had a large .tar file (a backed up WSL) and I want to delete a few directories and their contents from it using PA2023.
PA just destroys the whole archive as soon as I try to delete a directory, leaving it in a state where PA2023 won’t even open it any more.
I tried several times and also tried compressing it to .tar.xz instead - same result.
This should either actually work, or it should say operation not supported and do nothing.
Hello!
The regular version of PA 2023 is out for over 6 months now, but there is still no sign of the portable release.
(When) will there be one?
Thanks!
Hello!
Is there currently no portable version of PA2023 available?
(When) do you plan to release one?
Thanks!
Win 11 64 bit
I have some archives which have been encrypted, using the encrypt option either in pbs or when interactively creating a zip. When I open these, and look at files, I am asked for passwords, which I know, and then can view items or decrypt the files in the archive (tools>decrypt files).
However, when I use the Actions>Remove Archive Encryption (whether using the same zip or asking to write another), the routine shows progress bar to the end, but then just hangs i.e. “OK” never activates. All process information shows this stalled/hanging.
What can I do to sort this out?
For example:
Download this ZIP file: http://dslstats.me.uk/files/dslstats32W-6.5.zip
Everything in the ZIP file is in a directory “dslstats32W-6.5”.
However when I extract using right click “Extract Here” the name of the directory created is “2W-6.5” !
I am running PA 22.00.09 on Windows 11. I have seen the same happen with some other kinds of archive too.
If I compress a folder to a .pa using right click, Compress to folder.pa and use the new Windows 11 menu then the Options, Configuration, Miscellaneous, Use normal relative path setting is always enabled.
But I like this option disabled so I have to use the old style menu in order to get PA to compress a folder in the way I wish.
Just tried using the Modern (Windows 10) Icon set and seeing a few missing icons in both PowerArchiver Burner and PowerArchiver Encryption screens . They are all there in the Minimalistik icon set and the only difference I can see is the former is blue and the latter grey. In version 22.00.9

PA 22.00.09 shows a nag screen, when I try to open some setting windows. I have already PA 2023 Toolbox and PA shows, that it’s licensed in the info dialog.

I’m looking forward to deploying PowerArchiver 2023 to my users. Can you tell us when the MSI will be available for download and distribution?
Thanks.
Hi there,
there were some security issues fixed in 7zip:
https://www.zerodayinitiative.com/advisories/ZDI-23-1165/
https://www.zerodayinitiative.com/advisories/ZDI-23-1164/
As it seems, that PowerArchiver and PACL use the 7zip libraries, could you please update them to the latest version?
Hi,
From where I get PAVD2023.EXE? PowerArchiver 2023 tries to open it.
But it seems, it tries to download PAVD2021.EXE.
Thanks
I noticed that the version of ZPAQ used is older than the latest released 7.15 https://mattmahoney.net/dc/zpaq.html also there seems to be a newer fork that adds several features https://github.com/fcorbelli/zpaqfranz
It would be useful to implement this latest version (it also maintains the same syntax and behavior as the latest official release if used the -715 flag) and add when opening a zpaq file a choice of the version of the files to show (e.g. as dummy folders represented the various versions present). Since any previous changes are stored with this format, it is possible to extract a snapshot of a certain date/version.
Solved encryption didn't work correctly

HI.
I have here a little problem.
Actually I have encrypted a small file, 30MB, to an encrypted 7zip Archiv. This works very well.
But now I wanted to encrypt a big file which is 1.3GB large.
I use the same options like before for the small file. But I now get a 1KB file. When I try to open it I get only an error massege that powerarchiver 2017 can not open this file. The file seems not to be an valid Archiv. But as I said, I use the same Options to create an encrypted file from the big file as I use for the small file.
With powerarchiver 2016 i haven’t this Problems. When I use an big file like the one from above, all works well.
So what can i do to make an valid encrypted Archiv with the big file?
Or I maybe go back to powerarchiver 2016?Thanks for your help.

@mduss This should be fixed in new release:
https://forums.powerarchiver.com/topic/5848/fast-ring-powerarchiver-2017-17-01-04/7Can you let us know if it works fine? In PAES, it will prioritize speed over compression here.
thank you!

@mduss hello, are you using latest PA version? (.92) and what are your OS and your cpu/memory? What are 7z settings?
Also try using PA format instead of 7z, and let us know if that works. Thanks!

Hi spwolf
Today I have installed the new Version from PowerArchiver: 17.00.92.
This Version have the same Problem.
I use Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit and 32GB RAM with an Intel core i7 5930When I wanted to encrypt an Archiv I used the following way:
I use the kontextmenue in the file Explorer and use encrypt. Here I use the following Options:
target Format: 7-zip
compression:
Format: 7-zip
method: LZMA2
packing: Ultra
generate solid Archive: yesencryption method: AES - 256 Bit
This are the Options I use.
With small files like 50MB there is no Problem.
But when I wanted to encrypt a large file like an 800MB or several files which have togehter a large file size or so than I will get only a small 1KB file. But after some test I think I have found the Problem Kombination:
When I use the Methode LZMA2 AND one of the following Options for packing: Ultra, Maximum or normal, than I get this error.
When I use fast or None, than I haven’t this problem. So I think there is an error in the packing method Ultra, Maximum and normal with the LZMA2 method
But my Problem is, that I can not use the new PA format because I load this encrypted file to an webhoster so other Users from my Forum can download them. This archives are Game Mods.
And not everyone from my Forum use powerarchiver.
So I use a file format which can open from other archive programs too like 7zip.
So my favorite target Format is 7-zip. And I use LZMA2 and Ultra because the higher compression rate. With powerarchiver 2016 I didn’t have this Problems. With 2016 everything works fine with the same Options I described above.
So I will use 7-zip, LZMA2 and fast Options at the moment.
Thanks.

@mduss lets try this - right click on files in explorer and pick compress with options… now try same combination, does it work? It actually should work, there was some fix implemented in main PA, maybe not in paes.exe.
Also, for testing purposes, can you use pa/extreme for same file, just so we can see what is the size difference between PA and 7z?
thanks!

Hi spwolf.
The method with “compress with options” works very well. Here I have no problems.
So the Problem seems to be the paes.exe.The differences between pa/extrem and 7-zip LZMA2/Ultra are very small.
Depending on the used files the differences are 1 till 2 MB.
Here the Files had a complete size from 323MB and they were multiple files with difference file Format like .exe, .pdf and so on. The pa file was 2 till 3 MB smaller. With an other file I had a difference from 8MB. This was an single .zip archiv with 810MB witch I have encrypted with the Explorer Kontext “compress to…”
The filesize was 810MB. And here the pa file was 8MB smaller. So I think the paes.exe needs an fix.
By the way.
Do you have any Infos regarding this Problem?
