From the guys who gave us Opera comes a new browser. A technical preview has been released which you can download from here Chrome based but the UI is more like the old Opera with notes, bookmarks, (email coming later down the line). Basically all the things that Opera ASA told us was not possible in Opera 15+ Maybe one worth keeping an eye on, for us old Opera devotees.

    Total Commander

I have heard many of you refer to Total Commander. I currently use Xyplorer –- which in many ways is nice. But (a) there is almost always some glitch that causes it to crash if I use it as the default file manager, and (b) the developer’s help files are less than adequate, and the developer won’t give any help. So I am thinking about changing. Are you happy with it? Is it stable? Instructions clear?

    Recommendations for backup software?
    S
I do not want cloud backup. I have a service and am happy with it. I do not want imaging backup. Tried it and didn’t like it. I want a program that will backup the files I specify efficiently (without insanely slowly down the system), on a schedule, and with some decent options (exact copy, plain copy, versions, etc.). I have used a program I liked (SecondCopy) for at least a dozen years. Never thought I would change. But they are now on beta 4 on Version 9 – after starting on beta 1 some 7-8 months ago. It is still plagued with nagging problems. I keep trying it, finally uninstall the beta and reinstalling version 8. This is getting tiresome. It is time to look for an option. However, I am not having any luck. I keep find online backups and imaging software. But I don’t want either. Ideas? I would appreciate your guidance. Hugh

    Who uses cobian backup?
    J
For backup my documents i use cobian backup for some years. Ones everything is set, it runs by itself and the user don’t have to worry that there will be a failure with the backup. Are there people who uses cobian backup or is everyone using PA backup? I don’t know if i must ask the next question in this section or in the wishlist. Cobian backup is for sale. Is Conexware interested in the program or trying to implement the advanced option(scheduled backup parts)? Now i’m using the standard version of PA, but scheduling the backup is the only thing that i’m not satisfied about.

    Windows 8 RTM 1 August 2012
    skypxS
Today, I am excited to announce that Windows 8 has been released to manufacturing (RTM)! This means we’ve completed the product development and testing of the product and have started handing off the final code to our OEM partners. They can now begin preparing new Windows 8 PCs and devices they’ll introduce starting with General Availability. For more on RTM, I suggest reading this blog post from Steven Sinofsky on the Building Windows 8 blog. So when will folks be able to get their hands on the new Windows 8 RTM code? People will be able get Windows 8 starting on October 26th either by upgrading for $39.99 or on a new PC or device. And if you buy an eligible Windows 7 PC today, you will be able to purchase an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $14.99 (U.S.) through the Windows Upgrade Offer. However, we have a number of programs that provides various audiences early access to the Windows 8 RTM code to help prepare for Windows 8 as it enters the marketplace this fall: •August 15th: Developers will be able to download the final version of Windows 8 via your MSDN subscriptions. •August 15th: IT professionals testing Windows 8 in organizations will be able to access the final version of Windows 8 through your TechNet subscriptions. •August 16th: Customers with existing Microsoft Software Assurance for Windows will be able to download Windows 8 Enterprise edition through the Volume License Service Center (VLSC), allowing you to test, pilot and begin adopting Windows 8 Enterprise within your organization. •August 16th: Microsoft Partner Network members will have access to Windows 8. •August 20th: Microsoft Action Pack Providers (MAPS) receive access to Windows 8. •September 1st: Volume License customers without Software Assurance will be able to purchase Windows 8 through Microsoft Volume License Resellers. More info here.

    Opera moves to WebKit

So Opera is moving to Webkit. Presto will be no more. Opera gears up at 300 million users 300 million users strong, Opera moves to WebKit Good or bad? I’m undecided. If the great things that Opera is good at, security, customisation and innovation continue then I suppose it won’t make much difference to the normal user. At least it will bring an end to those sites that use browser sniffing to prevent Opera users using their sites properly.

    VMware Workstation Question
    moles42M
Question for you guys… I’ve never used any of the current breeds of software that enable you to install an operating system onto a virtual drive and I’m wondering if this is at all possible… can I install vmware workstation then create a virtual drive via it and install the OS of my choice and then after a period of time if I’m satisfied with it can I then copy that OS from the virtual drive to a secondary hard drive or is that not possible? or do I have to reinstall from scratch to secondary hard drive ? I’m hoping to install an older OS and once it’s running as I want it I want to take an image of it using Acronis True Image…that way I can use it or store it. I’m relying on your wealth of knowledge in this dept…:) many thanks, Mike.

Just found out this forum is finally getting the attention it deserves.

But getting back on topic. I installed w8 rtm on a new sdd. It now twice as fast as my win7 was. With a cold boot i’m in windows in 6 seconds.

I can pause my copy actions. USB3 is supported out of the box. I do like the start screen but it takes a few hours to get used to.

The only thing is that ms have to make it a little better when using the mouse. But thats it.

New Win8 desktop theme sure looks depressing though, all those gray windows… while on the other hand Metro is so flashy.

Did you like Aero better or Win8 gray?

Win 8 uses hibernation out of the box by default. You may not have known this as MSoft have stopped calling it that. It is dangerous and causes disk corruption if one multi-boots as can regular hibernation.

"Based on a number of reports, a quick search of the Microsoft forums, and testing, it’s clear that Win8’s new gimmick, called Fast Startup (hibernate on shutdown), is causing disk corruption. This occurs when partitions visible to Win8 are modified after shutdown (doesn’t affect reboot). It appears that Windows does not clear its cache and remount file systems after resuming from hibernation. This “feature” is enabled in Win8 by default. We highly recommend you disable this new feature to prevent corruption to your partitions. Fast Startup can be disabled using BootIt BM 1.10 or higher via properties of the Win8 partition in Partition Work. You can also enable or disable this option in Win8:

                    1. Open Control Panel.
                    2. Choose Hardware and Sound -> Power Options
                    3. Click on “Choose what the power button does” on left.
                    4. Click on “Change settings that are currently unavailable”.
                    5. Remove the check mark from the “Turn on fast startup (recommended)” under Shutdown settings.

Until Microsoft changes the default, ensure you have a good current image of all your partitions before installing W8".

The above quote is from the Terabyte Unlimited support forums.

Turn off the feature and check your slower boot times.

just got notified by Microsoft testing team (PA has been included into their testing for a while now) how one cancel dialogue in installer doesnt look good under 150 dpi - as they are doing Win8 150dpi tests due to the fact that many tablets and laptops will come with 150dpi…

I always find it cool when they notify us of things like that and that they do 3rd party testing to make sure their customers are treated right… so kudos to them :-)

Sounds like they have really taken a turn and listened to their customer’s. The core to windows 8 is around end user feedback over the past few years.

Its great they are speaking to 3rd party developers.

It also is a sign that PowerArchiver is seen in Microsoft’s eyes as a core 3rd part product.

                                    @Luxor:

I doubt that, if they did listen to their customers “metro” would be history.

Exactly. By the time I have modified all the Metro crud out of the way and got my start menu back and disabled the quick start/shut down*, all I am left with is a poor version of Windows 7 that accesses the hard disk a LOT when idle. Many of the UI config options have disappeared too.

*It is a version of hibernation and if one multi-boots and has common partitions, one can get massive disk corruption.

if they simply give back those two options they had in early betas, with start menu and straight to desktop, nobody would have complained at all.

honestly, my original metro apps by MS dont work anymore… i have no idea why :-)

I’ve had MS Windows 8 installed on a Laptop, but must admit I installed Start8 to bring back the menu.

Other than that I’ve had no major issues. Other than it never likes to shut down fully, often hangs.

But hay ho! the standard PC is being killed off, further sales of tablets and smart phones are up and pc sales are down consistently.

We will all be swiping screens in the next 3 to 5 years. :D

All the colour and desktop options have gone. I hate each window having a 4 unit border padding and not being able to change it or the colours - looks like the pastel default Win XP theme <barf>.</barf>
